General Abbott Urges Voters to Support Gray
For 10th Court of Appeals in May 29th Primary
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued the following statement today in endorsing the re-election campaign of Tom Gray: "Tom Gray is a friend of mine whom I've known since my days on the Texas Supreme Court. He has ably led the 10th Court of Appeals and I encourage the voters of Central Texas to return him to the bench."
Tom Gray said in response: "It a great honor to have our campaign endorsed by General Abbott. As a former District Court Judge and then Supreme Court Justice, he knows how important the appellate judiciary is to all Texans. I am grateful for his support".
General Abbott attended the University of Texas at Austin and Vanderbilt Law School. He has served as Texas Attorney General since 2002.
Abbott is well known outside Texas for successfully defending the right of the State of Texas to display the Ten Commandments in front of the State Capitol in Austin. He argued the case before the United States Supreme Court in 2005 (Van Orden v. Perry)

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples endorsed Tom Gray and issued the following statement: “Tom Gray understands the role of a judge is to interpret the law, not make them. He is widely recognized as a hard working administrator and conservative judge, and that is why my friends at the Texas Farm Bureau and many others are supporting Tom Gray for re-election as Chief Justice of the 10th Court of Appeals.”
Chief Justice Gray said, in thanking Commissioner Staples: “Texas farmers and ranchers have a good steward of their interests in Commissioner Staples and his support is appreciated. Once again we are humbled by the support from so many groups and Republican leaders like Commissioner Staples”.
Todd Staples is a native Texan and graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University. He was elected in 1996 to the House of Representatives and re-elected in 1998. He won two elections for the Texas Senate and is serving his second term as Agriculture Commissioner.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs added her name to the list of those endorsing the reelection campaign of 10th Court of Appeals Chief Justice Tom Gray. Susan Combs has served as Texas Comptroller since her election in 2006. Before that she was the first woman ever elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner, a post she held for 8 years. She served in the Texas Legislature for two terms. She also served as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County and as Texas Director for Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. She is a native of San Antonio and runs a cow-calf operation in Brewster County. She received her undergraduate degree from Vasser College and earned a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. In almost all those cases, it was a dissent by Chief Justice Tom Gray that pointed out the error and led to its correction. Those days are over now, and Tom Gray deserves much of the credit. Appellate courts help ensure that justice in central Texas is no different from justice in east Texas or west Texas; Tom Gray has proven his commitment to enforcing equal justice under the law.”

Texas Farm Bureau Friends of Agriculture Fund Announces Endorsement in the May 29 Republican primary
Texas Farm Bureau Friends of Agriculture Fund, Inc. (AGFUND) has endorsed Tom Gray in his campaign for reelection to the Waco Court of Appeals. “Chief Justice Gray has provided stellar leadership to the 10th Court for many years” said AGFUND President Kenneth Dierschke, who also leads Texas Farm Bureau (TFB), the state’s largest farm organization. “This court has a well-deserved reputation as a defender of private property rights. Justice Gray strictly interprets the law as he finds it and does not legislate from the bench.”
“Under his leadership, the Waco court has become one of the least frequently reversed Court of Appeals in Texas” Dierschke said. “He successfully guided the 10th Court of Appeals through the painful budget cuts of the last legislative session without reduction of staff or services.”
Chief Justice Gray responded to the AGFUND announcement by stating: “The cornerstone of Texas is the ranchers and farmers whose independent spirit and dedication to hard work built Texas. AGFUND is Texas Farm Bureau’s political action fund. It is a legal entity separate from the Texas Farm Bureau and may endorse and contribute to political candidates. AGFUND is funded by voluntary contributions from TFB members. The offices of the Texas Farm Bureau are in Waco.

The Honorable Jim Pitts, State Representative from HD 10 released the following statement today. “I have known Tom Gray since long before either of us was elected to office. Based on my experience working with him it is no surprise to me that since his election in 1998 he has proven to be one of the hardest working judges in the State. TEXPAC, the political arm of the Texas Medical Association has endorsed Waco Court of Appeals Chief Justice Tom Gray for re-election in the Republican Primary. Tom Phillips Endorses Tom Gray for Waco Court
in Republican Primary May 29th
Former Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court Tom Phillips, in a statement today said: “Tom Gray has demonstrated the intellect and scholarship demanded of an appellate judge. He has ably led the 10th Court of Appeals as Chief Justice and I urge the voters of central Texas to cast their vote for him in the Republican Primary”.
Tom Gray said today: “Chief Justice Phillips’ endorsement means a great deal to me and my family. He led the Texas Supreme Court during a time of transition. He understands the dual role of a Chief Justice on an appellate court. His support validates my decision to seek another term.”
Phillips was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court in 1987 by Governor Clements. He became the first Republican ever elected to statewide judicial office and served over 14years as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. A Texas native, Phillips graduated from Baylor University and Harvard Law School. He currently practices law in Austin with the firm of Baker and Botts.
Chief Justice Tom Gray was the first Republican ever elected to an open seat on the 10th Court of Appeals and has served for over 13 years on that court. He was appointed Chief Justice of the court by Governor Rick Perry in 2003. He is a graduate of Sam Houston State University and received his MBA in accounting from Texas A&M University. He graduated in 1985 with honors from Baylor University School of Law. After practicing law for more than a decade he began his judicial career. Three times the voters in central Texas have elected him to a seat on this court.
The 10th Court of Appeals sits in Waco and hears both civil and criminal appeals from trial courts in 18 central Texas counties. The district is comprised of Bosque, Brazos, Burleson, Coryell, Ellis, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Johnson, Leon, Limestone, Madison, McLennan, Navarro, Robertson, Somervell and Walker Counties.
